Oil Doubles in Past Year

Oil was up a record $10 on Friday, closing $139 a barrel and prices have doubled in the past year. So what are consumers doing about all this? Well, many have turned to the environmentally and economically friendly scooter, like this one found at SF Motoretta. If you would like to save some money while still getting out and about this summer, give them a call at (415) 346-8088.

Singles, Listen Up!

... or maybe that should be read up. Quizdates.com and Brainstormer.com offer events for singles and groups that are actually fun and not boring, and that means you could actually meet someone that doesn’t make you want to stay home and knit sweaters for your cat. We say check it out (and then tell us all about it. Yeah, we want you to go first).

We Can't Even Run This Fast

In just nine minutes, Javier Gonsalez and the staff at 9-Minute Oil and Lube of Palo Alto will get you back out on the road with the best oil change in town. They’ll even check the tires, brakes and the like. Stop by 3839 El Camino Real and take care of your car in just nine short minutes.

Coffee and The Paper

...go together first thing in the morning like, well, like nothing else, and Megan Cotter knows that better than anyone. She loves Peet’s Coffee on Chestnut Street in SF and the Daily Post, too. She asked “our” Barry (not the other one, this one is ours), for a Daily Post and had a cup of joe with it. Our Barry joined her (hence the photo) for two or three cups and then went off to finish his Daily Post route. In record time, we might add. To jump start your morning, stop in and join Megan and “our” Barry. Yeah, you might even get a Daily Post out of it, too.

Pass History

...even if you couldn’t in high school. Go the The Saloon at 1232 Grant Ave. in North Beach and ask Sherry Hart to pour you a shot or a glass. The Saloon is the oldest bar in San Francisco; it even survived the 1906 earthquake and all the others that have followed, bringing new meaning to a “stiff one,” if you get our drift...

An Artists Dream

Come meet Karmene Pruzinskis at Artist and Craftsman Supply at 990 Columbus. Here she displays the newest -- and hottest -- item around: Montana Gold. This colorful spray paint provides a wide color range with flowing color gradients for shading; perfect for photorealistic works. Come get a can or two, while supplies last.

CAN'T FIND TODAY'S EDITION? Get up earlier in the morning. Our news boxes are often empty before noon.

NOT ALL THE NEWS: Most of our local news stories are not available online. We put those stories in our print edition in order to get people to read the newspaper. While they're reading the news, hopefully they will see the ads placed by local businesses. Unfortunately newspapers have not been able to make money from their online editions. Print advertising still works better than online.

Think about it. A business can reach 20,000 San Francisco residents by advertising in the print edition of the SF Daily. The Internet is highly fractionalized, so in order to reach those same 20,000 readers, an advertiser would have to buy ads on hundreds of different Web sites at a total cost many times more than print advertising.

When a newspaper develops a Web site that can pay the cost of running a newsroom, we'll copy that concept. Who knows, maybe you're looking at the newspaper Web site that finally makes money. We just launched this site and would like your comments.
